Describe your organisation's/group's vision and mission (Required)
The Hamilton Community Mens Shed vision is to provide a space for the community to socialise and also use practical activities to encourage wellbeing especially for men.
Based on the original model created in Australia to mitigate Mens mental health resulting from bush fires and flooding the Hamilton was one of the first sheds to be established in New Zealand.
The shed governing body is a trust board. Below that is a shed committee who are responsible for the day to day running of the shed environs.

What do you propose to use the Founders Theatre building for?
What do you propose to use the Founders Theatre building for?
The Mens Shed wad part of an unsuccessful group seeking to use the former Hamilton Bowling Clubs facilities.
It sees the Founders site as also provided much needed community space for groups such as the shed. It believes that the Founders building could be repurposed to be a community arts centre much like the Christchurch Arts Centre.
What activities will be undertaken in the building?
What activities will be undertaken in the building?
The concept would be to gut the interior seating area and create a ground floor and mezzanine floor. The stage tower would be dismantled but the stage area kept as an area for rehearsals. The rear area would be converted into a practical space for groups such as the Men’s Shed and Avalon Woodturners.
The floor spaces could be converted into small studio spaces.
There is potential for the main entrance to contain a cafe. Provision would also be made for public toilets.
Will there be any commercial activities undertaken in the building?

There should be a strong emphasis on commercial activities to support the Arts Centre.

We believe the Hamilton City Council should remain the owner of the facility.
It seems ironic that the council has no hesitation to provide and maintain sports grounds, community houses, libraries, a museum, a regional theatre, swimming pools and other such facilities but seems reluctant to provide significant space for such a concept as a community arts centre.
Please summarise your plan to make the building compliant.
Please summarise your plan to make the building compliant.
We believe that the council needs to balance the cost of demolition and developing a park with the cost of developing this concept.
The Mens Shed does not have the expertise to do this.
How do you propose that the redevelopment of the Founders Theatre building will be funded?
How do you propose that the redevelopment of the Founders Theatre building will be funded?
If it will cost $x to demolish then create the park then this should be the budget for repurposing the building.
When would you want to commence your lease/ownership of the building and what are your timelines for redevelopment?
