Lake Management Plan Review

Overview

Hamilton Lake Domain and Innes Common are two the city’s most popular locations, for both residents and visitors.

Classified as recreation and local purpose (esplanade)  reserve under the Reserves Act, the management plan area includes Lake Rotoroa, the domain which surrounds the lake, and Innes Common, which accommodates the Hamilton Yacht Club and is used for club cricket and hockey (the Gallagher Waikato Hockey Centre).

Other features of Lake Domain include The Verandah Café and two playgrounds, including a new destination playground opened in late 2014. The lake itself is ringed by a path popular with walkers, dog owners, runners and cyclists. Water-based activities include sailing, waka ama and radio-controlled boat racing.

Under the Reserves Act, Council has legislative responsibilities for Hamilton Lake Domain, which includes the development and administration of a management plan. The current management plan is due for revision, and it’s Council’s role to develop a new one in consultation with the community.

This review will ensure the Hamilton Lake Domain Management Plan reflects current community aspirations.

Management planning enables Council to identify appropriate uses and activities for reserves and assists with day-to-day management and decision making. It is an opportunity to find community views and preferences and to provide for them.

The Management Plan Review will take approximately seven months. It’s a lengthy process, but an important one and it will include two chances for residents and stakeholders to provide input and comment on the plan we develop.

We’ve begun the initial consultation phase, and you can provide your comments and opinions via the online portal below.
