Consultation outcome
Background
In 2023 Council made the decision to redevelop Boyes Park into a multi-use park, with feedback from previous engagements telling us that the community would like to see a play space catering for all ages in this park. The new play space will be a neighbourhood play space, not a destination playground, which we expect will be mainly used by people living or spending time in the surrounding area.
From 22 July to 12 August 2025, we sought feedback from the community around Boyes Park to understand what they would like to see included in the new play space, so we could use these insights to help shape its design.
What we heard from the community
We asked the community to tell us what they would like to see included in a play space at Boyes Park, rank their preferred play equipment and share other insights about their households to help form a picture of who will be using the space.
We received 182 submissions with an additional 240 votes on the Visioner tool, and 40 responses to the full survey.

We asked
Tell us how you want to play, your way
We’re planning a new urban play space at Boyes Park in the central city and want to know what you’d like to see included.
Rather than a large destination playground which tends to attract visitors from outside the area, this will be a medium-sized neighbourhood play space mainly used by people living and spending time in the central city around Boyes Park – which is why hearing your thoughts is so important. This is a part of our Hamilton West Town Belt masterplan.
What type of play elements or experiences would you like to see here? This is your opportunity to have your say to help shape the design of the play space, which will be an exciting new feature within Boyes Park alongside the existing Dame Hilda Ross Memorial and Centennial fountains.

Couldn’t think of a worse location for a children’s playground. It’s surrounded by 3 busy roads. Please reconsider your choices HCC.

Any plans in there to fix the foundations? These look a bit neglected. Hopefully this playground doesn’t go this way too.

Robyn says:
It should have things strong enough for nostalgic young adults to briefly play on when walking home after a night out (seriously!)

A fenced area so it’s safe for little ones near the road/an area for under twos with suitable swings they can’t fall out of.

Please be more responsible with ratepayers money. I don’t think this is a good idea, leave the space as is

I'd like it to be the councils first inner city dog park. An amenity thats lacking currently.

Jess says:
Please include adequate shade - many playgrounds don’t have this and the sun is brutal. Also slides that are metal heat up and can burn skin

Swings and a picnic area with tables and benches. Maybe a designated place (circular path) for small children to ride bikes or scooters.
