Overview
This option would deliver improvements along the full length of Peachgrove Road, between Wilson Street and Frances Street.
To provide the highest level of safety for students, nearly all on-street parking would be removed. This would help reduce congestion, illegal parking, and unsafe turning movements during peak school times.
Students and pedestrians would be able to safely scoot, bike or walk along both sides of the road and cross near each school.
Improving these facilities would also make catching the bus easier for everyone.
Indicative cost: $4.8 million with ground-level crossings
- (or $5.4 million with raised pedestrian and cycle crossings)
For parents and caregivers dropping off and picking up students, we would:
- Improve parking provision on nearby side streets by making this time-limited (for example 10 or 15 minutes) during peak school hours.
- Enforce these time limits to make sure parking spaces are available when they are most needed.
There are 227 unrestricted parking spaces on nearby side streets. Council would work closely with affected local residents to manage changes and make sure they’re the best arrangement for each street.
Currently, Peachgrove Road’s on-street parks are unrestricted and often used by students for longer durations. As a result, spaces are frequently unavailable during school drop-off and pick-up times, leading parents and caregivers to park on yellow no-stopping lines.
As part of Option 1, we would work with students to identify all-day parking options on nearby streets.
Key features:
- Shared paths on both sides of the road (approximately 1.1 km total).
- One new signalised pedestrian crossing near Wilson Street.
- Upgrade (new shelters and accessible kerbs) and relocation of five bus stops outside HBHS.
- One new bus stop (new shelter and accessible kerb) outside Peachgrove Intermediate.
- Bus stops will be set back from the road.
- Four parking enforcement cameras.
- Retaining four short-stay car parks and removing 48 along this section.
- Implementing short-stay parking options on nearby side streets.
- Optional: Four raised pedestrian and cyclist crossings at HBHS, Kingsford Mews, Wilson Street, Scott Avenue (additional cost).
| Benefits | Things to consider |
| Most extensive corridor wide safety improvements out of all options. | Highest upfront cost. |
| Separated shared paths on both sides of the road make it safer for students walking, cycling and scooting. | Removal of on-street parking on Peachgrove Road would redirect traffic to nearby streets. |
| Addresses safety concerns at the busiest crossing point on Peachgrove Road (near Wilson Street). | Construction impacts would cause temporary delays/disruption. To minimise disruption, most construction would be in January 2027 when schools are closed. |
Removal of on-street parking on Peachgrove Road and addition of short-stay parking on side streets (during peak school times only):
| |
| Build-out of berms discourages U-turns. | |
| Bus stop upgrades with shelters make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to get on and off the bus in any weather. | |
| Installation of four parking enforcement cameras encourages better, safer parking behaviour. | |
| All proposed corridor changes would be delivered as part of a single project, rather than potentially needing to come back to make further improvements in the future. | |
| Upgraded crossing at Peachgrove Intermediate would have extended kerbs to shorten the crossing distance. |
